This Is The Police 2 is a management game by Weappy Studios. You are tasked with running a corrupt, under-resourced and incompetent police department in a remote hick town. The game is about balancing resources and keeping your officers happy whilst solving crimes – you can even take a few bribes and reinterpret the law as you see fit.

The stylised graphics of This Is the Police have received a welcome upgrade with better animations and motion capture which helps convey the story a little better. However, they won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and the graphics can sometimes feel a little jarring.

The graphics here are not going to blow anyone away but the stylisation does stand out and looks unique and cinematic. Sometimes details, like faces, get a little lost in this art style but it puts more work on the voice acting which is strong and keeps you engrossed.

Officers now have their own opinions and might decide that they won’t work with any lower ranking officers, or some might flat out refuse to work with a woman. It’s an interesting dynamic and adds more complication to managing your officers. However, it can be very frustrating if a call out’s professionalism requirement can’t be met because of some of the officer’s preferences in a partner.

This means you have to watch some crimes tick down as you’re unable to answer the call. I wish there was an option to force them to work together even if there were negative consequences; I often wanted to remind them that I’m the boss.

Another new addition is special SWAT missions that play out as turn based strategy, a la XCOM. This is a welcome breath of fresh air that works pretty well, and the perks your officers have picked in leveling up really come in handy. For example, your officers can have better aim or the ability to open doors quietly.

This Is the Police 2 is a dark and engrossing game. It does what all good sequels do: it takes the best bits of its predecessor and builds upon it in every way. The welcome addition of SWAT missions and leveling up make it less repetitive than the original. The tough decisions and moral ambiguity make Jack’s story a compelling tale of cops and corruption.
