Everyone knows my feeling towards 2D platformers and that I don’t have a lot of time for them. To me there all the same, there’s nothing different about them other than the theme to the game. You’re still running across a screen in a predetermined set of levels.

You’re maybe asking yourself, why does Joon keep playing these type of games if he hates them so much? The answer to that my friends is simple, I want to find and play that platformer that keeps me coming back and has that something different that makes me nod and smile with approval.

So, here we are with Megaman Legacy Collection. Did this game change my mind? Sadly, no. This time I find that its complete torture of playing not one, not two, not three but six… That’s right SIX platformers.

Guess what im going to say now. That’s right folks, I found them incredibly repetitive and going through them from one to six the only thing that really changed was a style change to levels and different enemies that you were facing. I wouldn’t even say that they were different, most of them were just reskinned and incredibly annoying.

One thing that gets me about this game as well is that Megaman can only shoot in a straight line, however enemies have the ability to shoot at you in several directions which goes through walls… Oh and being able to fly through what should be solid ground is quite annoying too. At least on Mario most of the enemies stick to their feet and don’t flap wildly around going through walls. Annoying.

I know there are a lot of people who will not agree with a lot of things I say, there will be gamers out there who love these games because there retro and it’s what they grew up and started out playing back in 1987.

That’s all very well and good, but I think that’s where it should be left. Allowed to play on the consoles it was designed for back then. There are so many remakes out there is unreal, I honestly want to start seeing new IPs brought to the fold, and not games from a bygone era brought back.

I am sorry for rambling on and not talking much about the game, but I honestly don’t know what to say about a game which is pretty much the same as the next 2D platformer out there.

There no point arguing about the graphics side of things as the game is from 1987 to 1993 and presents its self as it did back then in good ol’ 8 bit.

OK this is probably a nostalgia kick for some and I think this is the reason that rereleases like this get made, because they know there is a market for it where gamers will buy the game.

If I was to review this from a 1987 standpoint, I would probably say that this was a brilliant game. At the time this would have been true and would have been cutting edge for the 80s, but in 2015 I feel that people need to let go and we need to have new and exciting games/IPs hitting the store that is going to test the console to it limits.

A brand new Megaman game with new graphics and story would probably be most welcome in the community, but not rereleasing a nearly 30 year old platformer and expect the younger generation to catch onto it.

For gamers like me that are of the age to know these games, it’s a trip down memory lane and I have to admit it was a nostalgia trip for me, but that’s it. I didn’t get any joy actually playing the game because I found it mind numbing.

That’s not going to be the same for everyone and like I stated above there will be people who will love this.

Overall I think games like this should be left in the past and allow the new generation of games to be brought through. I want to be playing something that’s going to make me go oooooohhh.

If you like your platformers and like to have a nostalgia fix, I think this game is for you, if you’re not too keen about platformers I would stay away. Money would be spent more wisely else where.
